We were both sticky with mistakes I didn’t want to regret the moment my head stopped spinning. Dizzy, I pressed a hand to the wall and let the last few minutes resonate, let the heat of Ethan’s skin sink into my pores. I wanted his scent to live inside my lungs. Wood and rain and sex. “Yeah… probably a good idea,” he said, and I didn’t miss the anxious way he watched me, most likely waiting for me to shut down.

I didn’t blame him. The panic was there, hiding under the surface, dulled by the blush of his cheeks and the afterglow of an orgasm. It scratched at my skin, all the worry and unease of letting someone new into my space, offering him a weapon to use. But then Ethan smiled at me, and I couldn’t look away.

“Come on, we can take a quick shower.” His perfect smile fell, and the color in his cheeks paled. “Or not.” I gave his shoulder a gentle squeeze. “Hey… we don’t have to shower together. I don’t expect anything if —”

“I know…” He stepped away from my touch and buttoned his pants. “I can clean up in the guest bathroom or whatever.”

“Are you sure? You’re kind of a mess.”

“So are you… it’s kind of hot,” he said and pressed a quick kiss to my lips. “All I need is a sink and towel and I’m good.”

“Luckily, I have both.” I leaned down and grabbed his sweater from the floor. “Follow me.”

I led us back to my bedroom and opened the door. I was halfway to my bathroom when I realized he wasn’t right behind me anymore. Turning, I found him in my doorway, face blank and staring straight through me.

“Ethan?”

He didn’t answer, his chest rising and falling in a quick succession. His entire body was rigid with his hands balled into fists at his sides. In the silence, everything clicked into place. Earlier he’d shot me down when I mentioned my bedroom, but I’d figured his resistance had been related to anxiety and not wanting to take things further than he’d been comfortable. And then everything in the hallway about the shower and the guest bathroom.
